Important Safety Information for Cyclists

Attention bicyclists, you must obey all traffic laws and 24/7 temporary traffic signals located on US 550 between Purgatory and Silverton. For the safety of cyclists, vehicles and construction crews, you must come to a full stop at the temporary work zone signals and only proceed when the light is green. The work zones are single lane and only allow enough space for one-way single lane traffic. Disobeying the signals is against the law for both cyclists and motorists. Please wait for your turn and follow traffic laws to avoid head-on accidents or injury. Cyclists shall obey traffic laws - you’re a vehicle too!
Ride with the flow of traffic
Obey signs and traffic signals
Ride single file at all times and pass other bicycles quickly
Scan the road, anticipate hazards and communicate your moves to others
Use hand signals to alert nearby vehicles to turns or lane changes

Note: The signals will be temporarily set to green or flashing yellow during the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic on Saturday, May 24 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. US 550 will be closed to vehicle traffic during this time. The Yellow Line Rule is strictly enforced throughout the entire route from Durango to Silverton. Crossing the yellow line on your bicycle is prohibited and may result in fines or tickets issued by local law enforcement.
